## Summary

A root canal cleans out the infected nerve tissue inside a tooth and seals the canal so the tooth can stay in your mouth instead of being extracted. Most teeth take one appointment, occasionally two. Once the tooth is anaesthetised, the procedure is straightforward and comfortable, and treated teeth almost always need a crown afterwards to protect them from fracture.

## Key points

- Saves the tooth. No extraction, no implant, no bridge needed.
- Most teeth take one appointment. Occasionally two.
- Once anaesthetised, it's comfortable throughout.
- Almost always followed by a crown to protect the tooth from fracture.

## What you can expect

1. **Diagnosis.** _(≈ 30 minutes)_ We confirm the source of the toothache with simple cold and pressure tests, plus an X-ray. Some complex cases benefit from a 3D scan.
2. **Treatment Plan & Cost.** Written plan covering the root canal itself plus the crown that will follow, with full costs upfront.
3. **Root Canal Treatment.** _(≈ 60-90 minutes)_ Local anaesthetic, then the canal is cleaned and sealed. Most teeth take one appointment, occasionally two.
4. **Temporary Restoration.** A temporary filling protects the tooth during the few weeks while we plan the crown.
5. **Final Restoration.** A crown or onlay is fitted to protect the tooth. Treated teeth tend to be more brittle and benefit from full coverage.
6. **Follow-Up.** Review at 6 to 12 months with an X-ray to confirm healing.

## Benefits at a glance

- **Keep your own tooth.** Even a heavily damaged tooth can usually be saved. Your own root is always better than a replacement.
- **Modern, predictable technique.** Modern root canal treatment has consistent, well-evidenced outcomes. The bar for success is high.
- **Settles the toothache quickly.** The discomfort that brought you in usually clears within a few days of treatment.
- **Avoids the longer alternative.** Extraction, healing, implant, healing, restoration. That's a 6-month sequence and significantly more cost. Root canal saves both.
- **Comfortable appointments.** Once anaesthetic is in, the procedure feels like a deep filling. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is.
- **Crown on top to finish.** Most teeth need a crown afterwards to protect from fracture. We plan the crown into the treatment from the start.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the appointment comfortable?

Yes. Once the tooth is anaesthetised, the procedure feels like a deep filling. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is. The toothache that brought you in usually settles within a few days of treatment, and any mild tenderness when biting clears within a week or two.

### How much does a root canal cost?

£600 for a front tooth (single rooted), £720 for a premolar, £964 for a back tooth (molar with multiple canals). The crown that goes on afterwards is priced separately. Full Crossbank fee guide at crossbankdental.co.uk/price-guide. You'll get a written quote at consultation with the total clearly laid out.

### How long does the treatment take?

Most teeth take one appointment of 60 to 90 minutes. Occasionally a tooth takes two visits, especially molars with more canals to find and clean. The crown that follows is one or two appointments a few weeks later.

### Why do I need a crown after a root canal?

A treated tooth has had its blood supply removed and tends to become more brittle over time. A crown distributes biting forces around the tooth and significantly reduces the chance of fracture. Long-term studies consistently show crowned root-canal-treated teeth survive longer than uncrowned ones.

### What are the alternatives?

The realistic alternative is extraction. After extraction you can leave the gap (which causes the bite to drift over time), have a bridge (which involves cutting down the neighbours), or have an implant (more expensive and a longer process). For most teeth, a well-done root canal is the cleanest, lowest-impact option.

### How long will the tooth last afterwards?

Properly treated and crowned, root-canal-treated teeth routinely last decades. Modern long-term studies show survival rates of 85 to 95 percent at 8 to 10 years. Good oral hygiene and avoiding biting onto hard objects help.

### Will the tooth go dark afterwards?

Modern technique avoids the darkening that older root canals were known for, but front teeth can occasionally still change colour over time. If it happens, internal bleaching from inside the tooth can lift the colour back, or a veneer or crown can cover it cleanly.
